Historic Alliance Forms Among Opposition and Rebel Groups

After 5 days of deliberations, Sudanese opposition and rebel groups agreed to unite forces to overthrow the regime of the National Congress Party (NCP) and to jointly rule the country until democratic elections are held. The 15 page "New Dawn Charter" signed January 5th, outlines the future for a united Sudan, establishes a strong relationship with newly independent South Sudan, lays the groundwork for an interim government and emphasizes that the new alliance agrees to a "peaceful mass action and its transformation to a peaceful popular uprising."

On October 8, 11:30am shelling and gun fire were reported in the capital of South Kordofan state, Kadugli. President Bashir and his advisory, Nafie were scheduled to have meetings in Kadugli staring today through the 10th of October. Currently, the SPLA-N control areas as close as 15 km from the capital.

SRF Signs Document Outlining Future of Sudan When al-Bashir Falls

On October 4th, members of the Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) signed a document detailing the establishment of a democratic and secular government once al-Bashir's government falls. It calls for the unification of various liberation movements, opposition parties, military forces and rebel groups. Among the signatures to the paper, called the "Restructuring of Sudanese State Document," are members from the SPLM-North, Sudan Liberation Movement, Democratic Unionist Party and Umma National Party. The document outlines a six year interim period after the fall of al-Bashir during which an appointed president and state governors as vice-presidents will rule the nation while a federal system is implemented. Women are allocated a 30% representation in the interim government. The new structure will grant greater autonomy to the provinces, create a unified military and political party, and encourage transparency and productive relations with South Sudan.

Jalila Khamis Koko, 43, a South Kordofan native living in Khartoum, was arrested March 15th, 2012 for criticizing Omar al-Bashir's treatment of her fellow Nubans. Last month she was sentenced to death on treason charges for expressing her views and is currently awaiting execution.

3 days of protests have happened in Sudan's capital of Khartoum. Khartoum citizens say the revolt is gaining momentum by the day. The activist group Girifna has called on all Sudanese to take to the streets on June 30th, the day President Bashir took power 23 years ago.
